THE IMPORTANCE OF STRENGTH TRAINING
STRENGTH IS DEFINED AS THE ABILITY TO APPLY FORCE TO AN EXTERNAL RESISTANCE.
Power is defined as strength displayed quickly. Of all the variables involved in a vertical leap, the time of movement, the distance moved and the force generated, the most difficult to vary are time and distance. Force can be increased by multiples whereas time and distance are very constrained. To concentrate on strength training is to apply the effort for maximum effect.
The weight room is the place where effective training will deliver increased power by increasing strength, that is displaying strength quickly. All other factors being equal the more powerful athlete shall prevail over the less powerful athlete. This paradigm holds true for all classes of athlete across anaerobic to aerobic activities.
